Was it Necessary for Christ to be Human?
A few weeks ago in our theology class at Cornerstone Nouthetic Institute we talked about the doctrine of Christ. We talked about his deity and his humanity (for Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% man). One thing we touched on about his humanity is why Jesus had to become a man. As we talked about this, it became clear that without Christ becoming fully human, there would be no gospel. There would be no salvation for sinners. Below are five reasons why Christ had to become 100% man. (Theology really is important).
Why was it Necessary that Jesus was fully human? (Taken from Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology)
1) For Representative Obedience – Romans 5:18-19 “Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience that many were made sinner, so by the one’s mans obedience the man will be made righteous.”
2) To be a Substitute Sacrifice – Hebrews 2:17 “Therefore he had to be made like his brothers [humans] in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” (Propitiation means that the wrath of God is appeased by the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross).
3) To be the Mediator between God and Man – 1 Timothy 2:5 “There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
4) To be our Example and Pattern in Life – 1 John 2:6 “He who says that he abides in Him [Jesus] ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
5) To sympathize as high priest – Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
